Sky Bistro and Sunset Festival.

A few weeks ago, we had our second trip to Canada. Whilst in Banff we ate at Sky Bistro and celebrated the Sunset Festival.

Sky Bistro sits on the summit of Sulphur Mountain and is only accessible (unless you’re a mountain goat) by the Banff Gondola.

The gondola takes you the 2,292 feet to the summit of Sulphur Mountain. The Sky Bistro is 7,486 feet above sea level and is on the third floor of the observation centre.

The window tables have stunning views of Banff and the surrounding mountain ranges and lakes. We booked a table for Friday evening and set off on the 500kms drive from Kamloops with several scenic stops and lunch. We forgot about the 1 hour time difference between BC and Alberta! Realising that we wouldn’t make it on time, I rang and moved the reservation to Sunday evening instead. When we arrived in Banff we were treated to torrential rain and mist. Luckily the Sunday was hot, sunny and the views were stunning.

Because of our change of reservation, we had a short wait until a window table was available. It was well worth the wait.

The food was as good as the views. I had Ocean to Sky Soup, followed by Pan Seared Salmon and Mussels. We shared a selection of Canadian cheeses, chutney, honey and artisan bread. It was one of the best cheese boards I have had.

Following the meal we went up to the 4th level to the roof top observation deck, offering 360 degrees views of the six mountain ranges and the sweep of the Bow Valley.

We were offered Craft Beers and Cider, served in souvenir Sunset Festival glasses. As the sun began to set behind the mountains, we sat wrapped in blankets in front of a fire pit, listening to a local artist singing her songs. Could be this be the best place on earth to watch the sunset?
