Last month we dined aboard The Northern Belle train. Richards Birthday this year fell on a Wednesday, and as this is my long working day, we had birthday celebrations on the weekend at either side. This was his first present.
The Northern Belle train was originally owned by the Orient Express, but is now privately owned by Norther Belle Holding Co. I can say, having travelled when owned by both, there is very little, if any, difference.
Reminiscent of the luxury of 1930’s train travel, The Northern Belle travels through the beautiful British countryside – either en-route to some of the country’s top destinations or through stunning scenery on a round trip dining experience.
Each of the carriages bears the name of either a British Castle or Stately Home. We traveled from Leeds on Glamis. The seating was plush and luxurious. The tables were set with silverware and sparkling crystal set off by the starched white table linen. The walls were adorned with marquetry and the ceilings with murals.
We were greeted on the platform by the staff and ushered to our seats.
The journey started with a glass of champagne and canapés.
The wine list was given and my sister treated us to a bottle of Dom Perignon.
The starter was:- guinea fowl terrine, wrapped in leeks with pickled mushrooms and Pedro Ximenez dressing.
The soup:- Celeriac and apple.
Main Course:- Duo of beef fillet and suet pudding, creamed butter beans, seasonal vegetables and beef gravy.
Cheese Course:- Northern Belle Great British cheeseboard with a selection of biscuits and chutney.
Dessert:- White chocolate and honeycomb cheesecake with crushed honeycomb.
Coffee and Petit Fours
Strolling musicians and a magician entertained us at our tables.
Sitting in an armchair, gliding through the countryside on a Friday afternoon, with good food and even better company, there is nowhere else I would rather be.
