The Clink Restaurant – Cardiff

How would you feel about having a night out in prison?

Well that’s exactly what we did a few weeks ago.

57.5% of prisoners in Britain reoffend within 1 year of being released.

The Clink Restaurant at HMP Cardiff is a dining experience staffed by prisoners, working towardsCity and Guilds NVQ in Food Preparation, Food Service and Customer Service, leading to employment in the UK hospitality industry upon release.

The Clink’s Charity’s sole aim is to reduce reoffending through the training and rehabilitation of prisoners. It has seen this number drop by almost 50%.

The Clink Cardiff has won many prestigious awards including the Sustainable Restaurant Association’s 3 star award.

Last week we visited The Clink for our daughter Jess’ birthday. For starter, Jess and I had crab and smoked salmon mousse, pickled fennel, pumpkin seeds and grapefruit dressed chicory.

The Clink Cardiff Starters

Richard had Haddock and lemon arancini, chive creme fraiche, confit pimento and pomegranate.

The Clink Cardiff

Roast sirloin of beef, Yorkshire pudding and roast potatoes.

The Clink Cardiff

Braised saddle of rabbit, prune and mustard jus, pearl barley and girolle mushrooms.

The Clink Cardiff

Richard chose Dark chocolate and peanut creameux, banana ice cream, grilled cocoa nibs with white chocolate coulis.

The Clink Cardiff

Predictably both mine and Jess’ choice of dessert was Local cheese, chutney grapes and celery.

The food was not only well presented but was delicious. Alcohol can not be served in the restaurant due to alcohol not being allowed in prisons. They did however serve mocktails that were well worth a try.

Please share to help highlight the work of the charity.

Apart from Cardiff, The Clink is also available in

HMP Brixton, High Down, Styal and Manchester.
